Engineering a Smarter Baggage Handling Solution.
I-S-Solutions (UK) Ltd supported the delivery of a major Standard 3 Hold Baggage Screening upgrade at Isle of Man Airport, providing specialist baggage handling engineering, equipment supply and project delivery.
ISS's scope encompassed mechanical design, manufacturing, equipment supply, baggage handling system modifications, installation and site/project management. Rather than simply working to the initial base layout, our engineering team identified opportunities to improve the proposed arrangement and develop a solution better suited to the airport's operational and spatial requirements.
The resulting project combined new check-in and conveyor equipment with modifications to the wider baggage handling system, supporting the transition to Standard 3 screening while considering accessibility, maintainability and long-term operation.

A redesigned baggage handling solution integrating new check-in and conveyor equipment with the airport's Standard 3 screening infrastructure, developed around operational efficiency and maintainability.
The Standard 3 Upgrade.
The introduction of Standard 3 screening requirements required significant changes to Isle of Man Airport's baggage handling infrastructure.
ISS reviewed the base layout provided as part of the project and identified opportunities to improve the proposed system rather than simply replicate the initial arrangement.
Alternative layouts were developed to optimise the positioning of baggage handling equipment and screening interfaces. Particular consideration was given to the maintenance requirements surrounding the screening equipment, with the potential to avoid modifications to the existing airside/landside wall and allow maintenance activities to take place from the airside installation.
The conveyor arrangement was also reviewed to increase the available Level 2 decision time, improving the opportunity for screening decisions to be completed before baggage reached the relevant decision point. Automation of the Level 3 decision point was also considered as a means of reducing manual intervention.
Integrated Check-In & Baggage Handling.
The project incorporated substantial new baggage handling equipment alongside modifications to the existing system.
This included 12 two-stage check-in conveyor units, comprising weigh/label and despatch conveyors, together with new and modified BHS conveyors and associated equipment.
ISS's engineering approach considered not only baggage movement but also operator interaction and future maintenance requirements. During design development, access to equipment, drives and electrical devices was considered to support safe operation and make ongoing maintenance more practical.
Delivering Within a Live Airport Environment.
As with any major airport infrastructure project, delivery required careful coordination between new equipment, existing systems and the operational environment.
ISS's project responsibilities covered health and safety management, project delivery, construction management, project management and cost management, extending through production design, fabrication, installation, commissioning and testing supervision, verification and handover.
The planned installation scope incorporated a team of skilled engineers working over a 12-week programme, reflecting the scale of the mechanical installation and BHS modification works involved.
Designed for Operation & Maintenance.
An important part of the Isle of Man project was considering how the baggage handling system would perform beyond initial installation.
ISS assessed operator and maintenance access during design development, considering the location of equipment, drives and associated devices to optimise access and simplify future maintenance activities.
The proposed layouts also considered wider operational improvements to the baggage screening process, including increased decision time and opportunities to reduce manual intervention.
This approach demonstrates an important part of ISS's engineering philosophy: designing baggage handling systems around how they will actually be operated, accessed and maintained throughout their working life.
