Modernising Critical Baggage Handling Infrastructure.

I-S-Solutions (UK) Ltd supported a significant programme of baggage handling system upgrade works within Birmingham Airport's South Terminal, modernising existing conveyor equipment serving Check-In and baggage Lines 1 and 2.

The existing installation incorporated ageing drive technology and conveyor equipment, with elements of the system requiring replacement or modification to support the wider controls modernisation programme.

ISS's scope combined mechanical design, equipment supply, conveyor modifications, installation and site/project management, providing the mechanical engineering expertise required to upgrade existing infrastructure while retaining suitable elements of the established baggage handling system.

Upgrading Existing Baggage Handling Infrastructure.

The project centred on baggage handling infrastructure serving the South Terminal Check-In area and Lines 1 and 2.

While much of the existing conveyor system remained robust and serviceable, elements of its mechanical and controls infrastructure had become ageing or obsolete. The project therefore focused on targeted modernisation rather than wholesale replacement of the established baggage handling system.

ISS provided the mechanical engineering and installation scope required to accommodate the upgraded technology, including changes to conveyor drive arrangements and replacement of equipment identified as reaching the end of its operational life.

This allowed suitable existing infrastructure to remain in service while critical elements of the system were upgraded for continued operation.

Modernising Conveyor Drive Technology.

A major element of the project involved replacing existing conveyor drives with SEW Movigear drive technology, enabling the equipment to integrate with the upgraded control architecture.

Rather than simply replacing existing motors on a like-for-like basis, the engineering scope required the appropriate drive requirements to be determined through design calculations. Existing conveyor arrangements also required mechanical modifications to accommodate the new equipment.

Several conveyors incorporating centrally positioned drives were redesigned to use new head-end drive sections, requiring existing equipment to be dismantled and modified before the new sections could be installed, belts re-tensioned and the conveyors tested.

This combination of equipment replacement and mechanical modification allowed existing conveyors to be adapted to the requirements of the modernised system.

Replacing Life-Expired Conveyor Equipment.

Although the majority of the existing South Terminal conveyor infrastructure remained resilient, two conveyor bends located at the bottom of the steep inclines from Check-In had been identified as life-expired.

The works included replacement of an existing Transnorm flat bend and an obsolete Grammac spiral bend with replacement Transnorm equipment.

Both conveyors were positioned on a raised platform within a constrained area of the baggage system, requiring careful consideration of the sequence and method of replacement.

With only one baggage line able to be taken out of service at a time, the installation sequence was planned around the physical arrangement of the existing equipment to enable the replacement works to be completed safely and efficiently.

Coordinated Mechanical Upgrade Works.

The wider mechanical scope extended beyond conveyor drives and bends.

The project included the installation of replacement fire doors together with replacement security shutters and associated equipment, forming part of the wider programme of upgrades within the South Terminal baggage system.

ISS's responsibilities encompassed health and safety management, project delivery, construction management and project management through production design, fabrication, installation, commissioning and testing supervision, verification and handover.

Bringing these activities together under a coordinated engineering scope helped ensure that modifications to existing equipment and installation of new components were considered as part of the wider baggage handling system.

Engineering Around Airport Operations.

Upgrading an existing baggage handling system presents a different challenge from installing equipment within a new facility.

Existing infrastructure must remain serviceable wherever possible, access can be restricted and individual sections of equipment may need to be returned to operation before work can progress elsewhere.

At Birmingham Airport, the physical relationship between Lines 1 and 2 meant the replacement sequence itself formed an important part of the engineering solution, with only one line able to be taken out of service at a time.

ISS's experience working within operational airport environments allowed the mechanical modifications, equipment replacement and installation activities to be planned around these constraints.

Extending the Life of Existing BHS Infrastructure.

The Birmingham Airport South Terminal project demonstrates how existing baggage handling infrastructure can be modernised without unnecessarily replacing equipment that remains suitable for continued service.

By combining new drive technology with targeted mechanical modifications and replacement of life-expired components, the project addressed areas of obsolescence while retaining the robust elements of the existing conveyor system.

It demonstrates an important part of ISS's baggage handling capability: understanding existing systems, identifying what needs to change and engineering practical solutions that extend their operational life.
